Government Institute of Forensic Science, Aurangabad was established in the year 2009. It is housed in the campus of Institute of Science Aurangabad, which is a Premiere Institute imparting Post Graduate Teaching and Research since 1974.
Crime scenario is swiftly changing at global level. Criminals have started using ultra modern and sophisticated technology to commit techno-crimes disturbing common people in the society. The Higher and Technical Education Department of Government of Maharashtra is committed to create a world class curriculum in Forensic Science to educate the different class of people of society to counter this global techno-crimes scenario. Forensic science is the application of the principles of basic sciences and technology. It includes units like Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Ballistics, Photography, Toxicology, Latent Finger print, Polygraph, Narco analysis, Brain mapping, Voice analysis, Document Examination, Wild life forensics, Cyber forensics, Forensic Engineering and Mobile Forensic Laboratory. This makes it a multi-disciplinary enterprise and a challenging field in the justice delivery system and investigative process.
Different Forensic science courses are formulated by the highly professional members of the study committee, formed by the Higher and Technical Education Department of Government of Maharashtra to meet the need of the upcoming students and agencies involved in crime detection namely police, forensic scientists, medico-legal doctors, judicial officers, media personnel, journalists, corporate organization, etc., in a scientific and legal manner. In view of recommendations of study committee Higher and Technical Education Department of Government of Maharashtra started Government Institute of Forensic Science at Mumbai & Aurangabad wide G.R. No. NGC 2009/ (134/09)/MASHI-4 dated 17th August 2009.
The career prospects of forensic scientists coming out from such dedicated institute run by highly qualified and highly experienced staff in the field of forensic science, physics, chemistry, biology, cyber & law will comparatively be  high and bright. The opportunities exist in government organization, law enforcement agencies, public and private sectors as investigators and vigilance officers, organizations engaged in analytical work and can set up their own profession.
